Our Savior's Preschool |
|
| Our Savior's Lutheran School Preschool is an early learning program for children ages three through the year before Kindergarten. By means of our Preschool program we strive to foster the development of the young child through attention to his spiritual, social, intellectual, and physical needs, integrating all these aspects of learning throughout the program. A Scriptural viewpoint underlies all learning experiences. The day begins with a devotion based on the Psalms. This is followed by listening to stories integrating music and movement. Next comes “Active Learning.” Through what appears to be “just play time” the child makes discoveries about the world, integrating these into his life. Active learning promotes the student’s independence, purposefulness, organization, focus, decision-making, responsibility, and accountability. This is an opportunity to develop and practice real life social skills. After a snack and recess the children are ready to focus on more structured activities. This begins with listening to a Bible History lesson. Lessons are from the Old Testament through November, the birth of Jesus at Christmas time, and the ministry, death, and resurrection of Jesus for the remainder of the school year. The structured part of the morning continues as the children spend time in Learning Centers promoting fine motor skills, math concepts, exploring scientific principles, or experiencing a variety of art mediums. The daily routine offers a balance between child-initiated activities and teacher-directed activities. While learning activities are not compartmentalized, specific learning goals are established in each of the following areas. |
| Learning Goals |
| Spiritual Children will learn of Jesus, their Savior, and they will learn teachings of Scripture. Effort is made to help the child to understand sin and our need for forgiveness. We teach clearly that forgiveness is won for us totally and completely by Jesus Christ and that our thanks to God is demonstrated in the way we live our lives and in sharing the good news of salvation with others. |
| Social Social skills developed include the child’s ability to make good choices; participate in group routines; increase in sensitivity to the feelings, interests, and needs of others; and learn to deal with conflict. |
| Intellectual Language and literacy are a main focus in the area of intellectual development. Activities include listening to stories, having fun with the language through music and poetry, participating in sharing times, role playing, and acting out Bible stories. Math skills are supported through many activities having to do with classification, sequencing, counting, and experimenting with spacial relations. |
| Physical Large and fine motor skills are integrated into all activities but are especially developed by art activities, work with blocks and other manipulatives, water play, sorting, classifying, counting, and working mazes and puzzles. Children are given practice cutting and coloring so that they can develop moderate control with these activities. |
| Preschoolers sing during the Our Savior’s Lutheran Church Sunday service several times during the year. They also have a part in the annual special Children’s Christmas service. |
